Facilitation notes for presenters and participants

About this guide

Companion notes to lectures/06-refresher-session.md. For the presenter (running order, timings, activity setup) and participants (what to expect).

This is the annual refresher for returning tutors — not the new-starter induction. It assumes prior teaching experience and mixes admin updates, reflection, and a strategies workshop.

At a glance

Slot: ~2 hours (deck schedule: Admin at 00:00, Reflection at 00:30, Strategies at 01:15+).
Room: table groups of 4–5 — ask people to move and re-group at the start.
Audience: experienced tutors; keep admin brisk, invest time in reflection and strategies.

Facilitation notes

Admin block: returning tutors mostly know this — spend the time on the new (✨) items (qualifications/HESF compliance, contemporaneous marking) and the Admin Confusions discussion, which is where the real questions surface.
Reflection tasks: the value is peer exchange between experienced tutors — keep shares short so several voices are heard.
HITS walk-through: don’t lecture all ten evenly; ask the room which they already use, and tie Questioning and Feedback back to the induction modules.
Crazy 8s (15 min) — the main activity:
- Each table has picked one HIT strategy.
- Fold paper into 8; 8-minute timer; one sketch of a SoCo application per box; stop on the alarm.
- Then each person picks their best sketch to present. Keep the timer strict — the constraint is the method.

Handoff notes for a new presenter

The “About Charles” intro slide is commented out — add your own intro.
Update the ✨ “new this year” items so they reflect the current year’s changes.
Bring the HITS booklet reference/printout if you want tables to browse it.

Key messages

Refreshers are about peer reflection and improvement, not repeating induction.
High Impact Teaching Strategies are evidence-backed; tutors can apply many within their agency (esp. questioning, feedback, worked examples, collaborative learning).
Turn a strategy into a concrete, sketched plan you could actually run in a SoCo class.
